Talk about extreme pop-up; not fully aware of the event’s elegance and its masquerade theme, I dashed home from work to throw on all white attire. Had I known, I would’ve dressed more up to part; at least I got the monochromic color memo down. I played it safe and wore what would transition to the pub crawl ensued. It was my first time attending Le Dîner, or any event similar. If you love decor, this is the all white dream turned reality because most of the table settings here were decorated so lavishly. Le Dîner à San Francisco is a flash dinner picnic held annually in only SF locations. The location is kept secret and revealed only a few hours before the start of the event. Mucho thanks to my girl friend Connie, for inviting me! It was the perfect, fancy way to start off the weekend that is now over *sad face.

thelifegrubbing: berkeley bites

IMG_5199 IMG_5200IMG_5197 IMG_5201IMG_5191 Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset IMG_5228A composition of what made my week.

Sundays are my fun days; their my favorite days along with Fridays and Saturdays. I assume that goes the same for most people. To do it right, I ended last week by going on a pretty yet long hike to then stroll around Berkeley for lots, I mean lots, of bites with my friend. Nothing like ending a good workout with gourmet potato puffs and white truffle fries at Gregoire. SRSLY. It didn’t stop there because it’s only proper to wash it down with some Philz Coffee. We then sat down at this cute sushi spot, Joshu-ya, and filled our bellies with yummy tuna and salmon rolls, uni, and ama-ebi! Wait, one can’t simply forget about dessert. I can’t even describe how much I loved Ici’s handmade organic scoops of heaven, I mean, sorbets. Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard and mention that the harvest moon was sitting full, big, and low this week. What a lovely site while jogging to dinner mid-week that I had to snap a shot. Is it just me or whenever I think these tall electrical wires, this song pops up in my head, “Through the fire, through whatever come what may. For a chance at loving you, I’d take it all away. Right down through the wire, even through the fire”. Okay, signing off with the throwback Kanye before I start rambling even more.

ready. set. goal

IMG_1083 IMG_1089

I suppose if it’s announced publicly, it must become a commitment! Over Labor Day weekend, the girls and I painted the city of angels red. We reveled at a pool party, which prior to baring into bikinis, I decided to feast like a king because: 1. I normally do and 2. I wanted to be able to last through the night. Sadly, it was quite inevitable after feeling bloated as a whale to stray from that self esteem, especially with a pool filled with coke-bottled, perfect-figured sharks swimming around. Pause. Nobody’s perfect. Before going about the “stfu, you’re skinny”, this IS a skinny girl rant because that is exactly the problem. I don’t want to be viewed as skinny, I want to be fit! They are two completely different concepts and I have a ways to go. As I speak for myself, I am nearly shapeless; if I stood next to Spongebob Squarepants, it will be difficult to tell us apart aside from his charming good looks.

The issue with my body type is that I am an apple where all my food ends up being stored around my abdominal, which is the hardest area to burn. Frankly, its triple times more difficult because I love food so much that the thought of a strict diet… Well, its not even thought. After scoping out the various body types by the poolside, I’ve decided I really need to put my foot, er.. fork, down.

Currently, I’m only working out enough to maintain. I know without ever changing my diet (or the excessive amount I eat), it’s going to take a lifetime before I see real results. Here, my goal comes in: it’s time to put more thought to eating cleaner and scheduling time to exercise more. No more cheat weeks; it has to remain a cheat day, as in one not five. This state of mind doesn’t spring because I think I am “fat”, rather I want to be healthy. I don’t want to start panting excessively when I speed walk up hills. I want to see some definition in my arms, abs, and let’s just throw in a bubble butt while we’re at it. Wimpy as it sounds, I want to be able to do a proper pull up without chair assistant, aside from reaching the bar, because at this point, simply dangling myself on the bar might not be the cutest look.

I’m not trying to do a disappearing act with myself, more so, I hope to start selling you tickets to the gun show. Kidding. Before I go over my head, I will give myself until my birthday, a full two months, to really push myself out of my comfort zone (being lazy). I’m not trying to be a body builder, I’ll be ecstatic with half the strength of one. So here’s to the extra sets of burpees, incorporating more weights, staying away from eating multiple cookies in one sitting and running that extra mile.

Whether reading this motivates you to try to reach or push harder in your personal health goals or if you think this is petty, it’s absolutely fine. As long as I’m able to entertain a positive thought and promote even the littlest growth, we can be in this together. Let’s get it!

comfortable

IMG_4439IMG_4443IMG_4444 IMG_4441IMG_4445

outfit: Gap double breasted shawl collar sweater, Cotton on harem pants jumpsuit, Forever 21 sweater, vintage Coach bag, Urban Outfitter boots. food: Trouble Coffee and Outerlands

Overcast on a summer’s day. Sleepy, squinty eyes. Comfortable attire and catching up over brunch with some good friends. With the latter taken place, the day’s not all too bad. So what, the leopard may be a bit much for some but I’m a sucker for harem pants and toned down with cozy neutrals, I can dig it.

If you haven’t noticed by now, I’ve been on a ever long streak of not shopping so all the previous and future posts will most likely be outfits utilizing what I already own. Don’t get me wrong since I’ve made a few misdemeanors, purchasing some newbies so it’s all about self control. Sadly, I believe that all the money I’ve saved myself from shopping is counteracted by my food consumption… and that’s another topic up for discussion.

I can’t wait for a wardrobe revamp but until then, this whole not buying new, has really pushed me to flip my drawers, trying to style pieces together. It’s a fun challenge I’ve accepted where I have my days when I think “why the hell did I buy this” and days when I’m like “oh yeah… forgot how cute this was”. Point is, it allows me be more aware, economical and sustainable to our environment. Rather than constantly in with the new-new, I’m a big advocate for thrifting (before the thrift shop song popularizing it) and just finding ways to ‘recycle’ your clothing – whether it be re-thinking how you wear it, turning things into a DIY project, donating, etc. Hope it can inspire you to dig through your closet and pay a visit to some of the old and mixing it with your new.

how to: keep it short and sweet

IMG_0164IMG_0165IMG_0169IMG_0179

vintage Ann Taylor blazer, Gap waffle knit sweater, Old Navy shorts (similar), Target shoes, Louis Vuitton speedy 30 bag, H&M necklace, gold anklet from India

Let’s keep this short, pun intended. I love rocking shorts but being in SF, unless you’re ballsy and can brave the cold weather which I can’t, shorts just pile up in the dark corners of my closet. However; perfectly and magically with the welcome to summer, my shorts and legs finally get to see some sunlight! We were encouraged to wear our shorts to work so hey, don’t mind if I do. Especially with the weather being absolutely amazing… if only for two days.
Thought I’d share a few tips on

HOW TO WEAR SHORTS TO WORK:

DO’S:
STILL DRESS LIKE YOU’RE GOING TO WORK. Rocking a blazer or good silk blouse with shorts are always a win!

CONSERVE YOUR TOP HALF – Keep the focus on one body part at a time. In this case, it’ll be your lovely legs.

WEAR APPROPRIATE SHORTS – In a conservative place, shorts are already walking a fine line so opt for shorts that don’t cling too much on your derriere. Denim can work sometimes, but if you’re not sure, sticking to dress shorts is a safe bet.

DON’TS:
WEAR THOSE DENIM, BOOTY CUT OFFS – Please.Don’t wear any type of booty shorts to work in general!

OVERLY SEX IT UP – You’re already strutting those sexy legs so it’s not necessary to wear a strapless top or a low cut shirt. Remember that you’re at work not dressing for a night out.
(If you must, cause you’re heading to Happy Hour or dinner after: keep it classy by covering up with a blazer or cardigan and de-clothe after work)

BEND AND SNAP (Legally Blonde reference. If you don’t know, watch: here) – I know, I know.. It’s hard to resist when you accidently drop a pen but best to keep your bum in your shorts during work hours. Unless you’re trying to snag that hot coworker, that’s all on you.

This may be new for you or this may be all things you may already know. If so, take it as a good reminder. Either way, keep it short and sweet!

you are more beautiful than you think

Such a powerful video for everyone out there.

We all lust over the pretty images of the perfect figured, sultry lip, and glistening eyed models advertised everywhere and on everything around us that we start to compare ourselves to what we feel is the “perfect image”. Rather than scrutinizing, I think we should acknowledge those lovely images but also look in the mirror and see that same beautiful light reflect amongst ourselves. There needs to be a reminder that those images that we see, they are part of someone illustrating their concept. It is THEIR vision of beauty and advertisement’s are made to be unreal; not necessarily “the look” you have to achieve. Take for instance the magazine ads of a model prancing around in a top and cute underwear. We do NOT walk around on the streets in just our underwear (well, most of us don’t with exception of halloween. and SF Pride. and EDC. Anyways, you catch my drift!) It just makes for a great photo!

Hey, I’m totally guilty for looking in the mirror some days, and all you see are flaws. I get skin irritations all the time and when allergy season hits.. boy! Is it hard to feel attractive. I think the best thing to do is, we all know we have a personal traits we do like about ourselves.. whether it is the color of our eyes, our smile, a nice rack, butt.. etc. So If you’re ever having a bad day, you should think to yourself, “hey, at least I got a nice ____!”

We are our own worst critics, especially women, and we have to remember that we are more beautiful than we think. So think beautiful!

what it is to “do good”

I read an interesting article last week and it really got me to step back and re-evaluate. In the past, my thoughts were – if you must – a bit extreme or naive, however you want to describe it. My feelings were: if you’re gonna do good, then actually DO GOOD. Simple as that. Don’t pretend like you care when you really don’t. Not that those feelings have changed, but I realized the complications (biggest issue is always the initial financial concerns) that companies have to face when they try to convert and “do good”.

I just want to say how appreciative I am of H&M, currently one of the leading fast fashion companies, really pushing to be more sustainable with goals to not discharge hazardous chemicals, using more natural and organic fibers, and providing better attention when auditing factories. Yes, many other companies have these goals on their “Go Green – to do list” and they should be! It’s just nice to hear a massive company like H&M really taking the wheel, cause it make me feel like they actually CARE. Though I’m sure we may have our veiwpoints, (hey, if you asked me to name a sustainable brand.. H&M wouldn’t be my answer) I really love that they’re trying to change how we perceive them. Not just for the appearance – okay, maybe – but since their previous mishaps, I’ve seen their continual strides of being more eco-friendly. I honestly really like their “conscious collection”. Plus, they have some badass waste elimination goals they want to achieve by 2020. Sounds really far away, but hey, I’m glad it’s an initiative. Rather than just testing the market on how being “eco-friendly” will appeal to customers but going beyond. I really hope their factory compliance is real.. there’s plenty of sweat and blood that goes into a cheap t-shirt but we’ll get to that another day. All in all, I’m just glad a company so big, is taking many little steps into the right direction.. I think that’s doing “good”.
